Christmas is Just Around the Corner: Festive Craft Projects with Kids
Where did the year go? It feels like just yesterday we were welcoming in the New Year, and suddenly, Christmas is right around the corner! As a family, we’ve always found joy in making, rather than buying, gifts and decorations, and I’m excited to pass that tradition on to my grandchildren this year.
If you’re looking for fun, budget-friendly projects to
create with little ones, you’re in the right place! I’ve gathered four
delightful wet felting ideas from our past family Christmases, all made using
readily available household materials. While you may need to order some
supplies from online craft stores, they require only small quantities, keeping
costs down.
Project 1: Shiny White Contemporary Christmas Trees
These elegant little trees make a stunning entryway display!
Last year, I clustered them together with a tea light candle underneath,
creating a warm, welcoming glow for visitors.
What You’ll Need:
- White
roving
- Angelina
fibre or glue and glitter
- A
piece of heavy plastic or underlay
- Basic
wet felt making supplies (bubble wrap, soapy water, rolling pin)
- Decorative
elements (optional)
Project 2: Traditional Mini Christmas Trees
A classic choice, these trees are perfect for your holiday
table or as charming “stocking stuffer” gifts. Add a tea light candle beneath
for an extra festive touch!
What You’ll Need:
- Green
Roving
- Heavy
plastic or underlay
- Tiny
ornaments or embellishments
- Basic
wet felt making supplies (bubble wrap, soapy water, rolling pin)
Project 3: Plum Pudding Surprise
This fun project is ideal for teachers or colleagues! Fill
your mini plum pudding with chocolates for a delightful surprise. They also
make lovely place holders when paired with a tea light candle.
What You’ll Need:
- Brown
wool batt or roving
- Red
or green roving for saucer
- Stuffing
or chocolates
- Decorative
elements (e.g., icing, berries)
Project 4: Holly Leaf Brooch
One of my favorites! This holly leaf with berries can be
worn as a brooch or scarf pin, or used to adorn your Christmas tree. The family dog
even got into the spirit by sporting a holly leaf on his collar!
What You’ll Need:
- Green
and red roving
- Scissors
- Crochet
cotton
- Beads
- Brooch pin or fine ribbon
